Russia's President Vladimir Putin called the downing of an Su-24 fighter jet in Syria a stab in the back at a meeting with the King of Jordan Abdullah II in Sochi.

The Russian Su-24 military aircraft that crashed in Syria earlier in the day was downed by an air-to-air missile from a Turkish plane, Russia's President Vladimir Putin said Monday.

The attack on Russia's Su-24 jet is a "stab in the back", the president said.

Vladimir Putin stressed that Russian pilots were in no way a threat to Turkey. "This is an obvious fact."

Russia's president stated that the Su-24 incident in Syria steps over the boundary in the conventional war against terrorism.

"This event goes beyond the fight against terrorism. Of course, our servicemen are engaged in a heroic struggle against terrorism, not sparing themselves or their own lives. But today's loss is related to a stab in the back, carried out against us by accomplices of terrorists. I cannot otherwise describe what happened today," Putin said at a meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah II.

According to the Russian leader, the aircraft was around a kilometer (0.6 miles) from Turkey when it was hit.

"Our aircraft was shot down over Syrian territory by an air-to-air missile from a Turkish F-16. It fell on Syrian territory, four kilometers from the border with Turkey. When attacked in the air, it was flying at an altitude of 6,000 meters, one kilometer away from Turkish territory," Putin said.

Abdullah II expressed his condolences and stressed the need to join forces in the fight against the Islamic State.

Russia and Jordan must join efforts in the fight against terrorism, Vladimir Putin said, adding that the military and special forces are already working in that direction.

"We are in constant contact <…> Today, when such a serious fight against international terrorism is going on, we must join forces, this is obvious. I’m very pleased that our military and special forces are working in this direction," Putin said during a meeting with Jordanian King Abdullah II in Sochi.

Earlier Tuesday reports came in that the Russian Su-24 jet crashed in Syria. It was most likely downed by a ground missile, according to the Russian Defense Ministry's statement.

Turkish F-16s carry the AIM-120 missile. Its range and speed are classified, but believed to be around 300km and Mach 5 respectively. If the F-16 was 50km away from the SU-24 when it fired its missile, the missile's flight time from launch to target would be around 30 seconds. The SU-24 could travel up to about 10km during those 30 seconds. So it's possible that if the SU-24 was 1km on the Syrian side of the border when it was struck, it could have been up to 9km on the Turkish side of the border when the missile was launched. Regardless of if the SU-24 ever entered Turkish airspace, firing on it was unwise. There's no chance in hell that Russia was actually planning to attack any targets on the Turkish side of the border. The AIM-120 is a very sophisticated missile. It's newest variants are extremely resistant to jamming or countermeasures. The SU-24 would have been able to jam or decoy a less sophisticated missile. The U.S. should be more careful about providing sophisticated weapons to nations that will use them rashly. That's a good way to accidentally start WWIII.

Russian military planes enter U.S. airspace and buzz U.S. navy ships all the time. The U.S. escorts them, but there's no way in hell they would ever fire on them unless intel indicated a Russian attack on the U.S. was imminent. This was a rash act by Turkey to open fire. Let's all hope and pray that the pilots make it back to Russia safely. That will make the whole incident much easier to move past.

I disagree with COOLHEAD... SU 24 is not a fighter.. SU 35 is..and SU 30..but maybe it was not present. Russia DO have equipment to stop the U.S missiles. But remember that Russia erroneously, see Turkey as a friend and ally. Now is learning the truth. They have terrorist training camps , to train NATO's mercenaries.
Never sign Victory before a war start. Hitler did that same mistake. With a whole European coalition. And volunteers from abroad. Sponsored by U.S and U.K to destroy Russia.
I don't understand why S.U 30's were not escorting. But apparently they shoot from inside Turkey..now Russia seeing why U.S planes are in Turkey.

This is actually a very cruel and incautious act instigated by Turkey! After dealing with ISIS, Russia should now focus on how to deal with evil warmongering state like Turkey, If Turkey brought down a Russian plane, then Russia should also hit back in the same way by firing a Turkish plane. From history, it is evident that Ottoman Turkish were enemies of Russian empire but the Russian empire brutally defeated the Turkish Barbarians again and again. Russian empire always proved how strong they were. The humiliation and defeat was a shame for Turkey since it could not digest the fact it was powerfully crushed and humiliated by Russian forces. But today the coward cunning fox under the disguise and back power of NATO(without NATO it is impotent!), it is trying to show its ineffective weak muscles over King Lion like Russia! Always remember the LION/BRAVE comes alone to fight, but scared DOGS/FOXES/COWARDS come in groups(NATO). NATO is combination of gutless coward dogs(with guilt of funk and great fear depend on each other for support) who wants to fight against a single Lion like Russia! When Lion roars , the foxes run for their lives!

It is clear that NATO indirectly shot the Russian plane down in Syria, and threw the great Pilots
    to the ISIS -US killers.

I´m from EU and totaly condemn shooting down the plane. I wouldn´t care if they fly over my head or they land on my backyard as soon as they are helping to destroy ISIL. My big condolences to the Russian yet crew and hope that EU will condemn Turkey. I´m hoping also that EU will connect with Russia, but not like this.

It is so sad that the pilots could rescue themselves in the air and where then murdered on ground by insurgents. If Turkey intends to stay in NATO they shouldn`t be allowed to make such a decision on their own
  • Observer
The pilots had safely ejected from their plane, but the bruises on their heads and faces show they were later killed by the terrorists, ... The pilots' bodies are not wounded and their clothes are not torn ...

    Observer,
It has been released a video where the "moderate rebels" of FSA shoot at the pilot descending with the parachute.

you know guys i can't just feel like swallowing the bubble , turkey must be made to pay, it should really pay with the haviest price possible , NAtO mustn't be an alliance of hypocrites and made men , that got no respect for humanity , this makes me think Turkey jets must be shoot down once they invade the syrian boarders

    Jaodernein, Hi

Exactly right .... Very sad they were murdered by the so-called MODERATE REBELS!!!
  • This is so simple. Turkey is on the side of is/daesh/al qaeda. Everybody knew that. But no one expected Erdogan to actually use his airforce to support them. Desperate times for the Sultan wannabe. His dream will become a nightmare. These are bad times for normal peace loving Turks. What a monster they have leading them. Ataturk is rolling in his grave. All the good progress Turkey and is people have made in the past 50-60 years are going down the toilet. The only thing that can stop this madness are the good people of Turkey. Find a way to get rid of this Sheitan ASAP.

A country called “the Blight of Asia”. That’s what Turkey was, and that’s what it is.

While this is indeed a terrible breach of trust, Russia must keep its cool now. It has proved its moral superiority over the West many times, now it must do so again. If I were Obama, Merkel, Hollande, Cameron etc., I should have to crawl on my knees before Putin begging for forgiveness.
  • HamidReza
Turkish authorities and the Turkish pilot opened fire I do not think my hate upon you To give it attention. It was a cowardly And their cowards always hide behind something as you(NATO??!!) . Finally I'm sure Land is our heritage not you
  • The kingdom of Jordan is a strategic partner of the U.S and EU,comparable to Turkey. It will not surprise me if Jordan stab Russia in the back just as Turkey influenced by the West did.
  • coolerheads
Condolences to the families of the pilots. This incident was a tragedy for all involved. Turkey should never have fired on the plane. I hope the U.S. re-thinks its stance towards Turkey when it comes to providing high-tech weaponry.
