MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Russian Foreign Ministry on Friday lodged a complaint to Poland’s ambassador to Moscow over the desecration of tombstones belonging to the graves of Soviet soldiers in a graveyard in the eastern Polish city of Milejczyce, the ministry said in a statement.
"On September 25, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned Polish Ambassador in Moscow [Katarzyna] Pelchinskaya-Nalecz, and declared a resolute protest against the desecration by unknown vandals of over 50 tombstones and monuments on the graves of Soviet soldiers in a cemetery in the city of Gmina Milejczyce (Podlasie), where about 1,600 Red Army soldiers, who died on Polish soil during World War II, are buried," the statement reads.
Moscow has repeatedly protested against the demolition of Soviet monuments in Poland in recent months.
In July, a monument to the Soviet-Polish Brotherhood-in-Arms in the town of Nowa Sol in western Poland was demolished.
Earlier in September, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova announced that Russia has demanded that Poland implement measures to stop the destruction of Soviet monuments in the country.
