MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Blatter, 79, announced on Tuesday his decision to step down, just four days after he had been re-elected for the fifth term as head of the international football governing body.
“Work continues, cooperation with FIFA continues, and, most importantly, Russia continues preparations for the 2018 World Cup. All plans are being implemented,” Peskov told reporters.
The spokesman added that the Kremlin had no information on the reasons behind FIFA president's resignation, and noted that Blatter would continue to serve as president until a FIFA congress was held.
“The resignation was, of course, [a surprise],” Peskov told reporters.
Asked whether Russia was worried that a new FIFA head could try to prevent the 2018 World Cup from being held in Russia, Peskov said that a new FIFA president would be elected “not tomorrow and not the day after tomorrow.”
“So let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” he said.
