Force 3.1 Quake Rattles Russia's Far East Island of Sakhalin

An earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale hit the island of Sakhalin in Russia's Far East, local emergency officials said early Saturday.

The temblor occurred at a depth of 19 km northwest of Troitskoye village in the island’s Anivsky district.

There have been no immediate reports of any casualties or material damage caused by the quake.

Sakhalin Island, in the Okhotsk Sea north of Japan, is in a zone frequently subjected to seismic tremors, and has been the scene of several major earthquakes.
