Speaker of the upper chamber of the Russian parliament said that Cuban leader Raul Castro will visit Moscow in May to attend the Victory Day celebrations.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Cuban leader Raul Castro will visit Moscow in May to attend the Victory Day celebrations, the speaker of the upper chamber of the Russian parliament said Monday.

On May 9, Moscow will host a massive military parade to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. At least 25 international leaders are expected to attend the event.

“We are waiting for Cuban State Council Chairman Raul Castro, who will visit us to attend the Victory Day Parade,” Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko said.

The announcement comes despite Washington’s Friday call on governments to take into account the events in Ukraine before considering Moscow's invitation to attend the Victory Day commemoration and US intention to normalize US-Cuba relations.

A full list of the participants in the events in Russian Capital will be announced by the end of April 2015.
