MOSCOW (Sputnik) Russian anti-ship vessels are conducting live torpedo and artillery drills in the Pacific Ocean, the Russian Navy's Pacific Fleet's press service said Monday.

"Anti-ship vessels are developing joint group combat actions. Live artillery firing from AK-176 and AK-630 guns, as well as torpedo launches will be conducted against "enemy" submarine and surface targets," the press service said in an announcement.

More than 20 combat exercises will be held, the press service added.

The country's Eastern Military District announced earlier this month a series of retaliatory missile strikes across seven regions of Russia's Far East near the Chinese border involving aviation, navy, missile and artillery capabilities.

Overall, the Defense Ministry expects to carry out from 3,500 to 4,000 nationwide military exercises this year.

The 76.2 mm AK-176 gun mount is designed to strike down naval targets, but is also capable of taking down short-range missiles, an ability also shared by the 30 mm AK-630 weapon system.
