Russia's key special services – the foreign intelligence service SVR and the federal security service FSB – said Tuesday they were well-protected against any possible cyberattacks, including by the recently uncovered hackers known as the Equation Group.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Kaspersky Lab, the Russian Internet security company that discovered the Equation Group said the hackers had targeted the computers of the Russian government, military, space and scientific institutions.

"Russia's main special services, the SVR and FSB, were not affected by the attacks by the Equation Group hackers," SVR spokesman Sergei Ivanov told RIA Novosti.

Ivanov pointed out that the SVR's networks had sufficient protection from such attacks.

“Our computer networks have enough protection against such types of attacks,” the spokesman said.

An FSB spokesman made a similar comment, saying that the FSB's computers have "rock solid" protection against hackers.

On Monday, Kaspersky Lab said it had discovered a highly sophisticated spying program that had been placing malware on hard drives worldwide for almost two decades. The programs have infected over 500 computers in more than 30 countries, with Iran and Russia seeing the most infections, the company said.

Kaspersky Lab did not link the Equation Group to any country, but indicated links between the recently found malware and Stuxnet, a worm, allegedly used by the US NSA to infiltrate Iranian nuclear reactor systems in 2010.
