“During the meeting it was stressed that the geographical expansion of IS terrorist activities and the Islamic extremism in general causes particular concern,” Peskov said, commenting on the results of the council’s Monday meeting.
The spokesman added that the Security Council denounced the beheading of 21 Egyptian Christians by the IS.
“Members of the Russian Security Council have strongly condemned another barbaric killing committed by IS terrorists in Libya, [the execution of] Egyptian Christians,” he said.
On Sunday evening, the ISIL posted a video featuring the execution of 21 Egyptian Christian Copts who were abducted in Libya.
Following the video release, the Egyptian Air Force carried out a series of airstrikes in Libya, reportedly killing between 40 and 50 Islamic State militants. The Libyan Air Force reportedly also conducted airstrikes on the IS positions, killing some 50 IS fighters.
The Islamic State is a radical Sunni extremist group operating on the vast areas in Syria and Iraq. The extremists have released a number of videos showing executions of foreign nationals, causing international outrage.
Currently the US-led coalition comprising over 60 countries is conducting airstrikes against the militants. Kurds have also proved to be an effective force to battle the extremists.
