The claim of the Prosecutor General's Office to formally recognize Islamic State as terrorist organization in Russia will be subject to consideration at the Supreme Court on December 29.

MOSCOW, November 13 (Sputnik) — The Supreme Court of Russia will consider a claim by the Prosecutor General's Office to recognize the international organizations Islamic State and Jabhat Al-Nusra as terrorist organizations, the court's press service told Sputnik Thursday.

"The claim of the Prosecutor General's Office to formally recognize these international organizations as terrorist is subject to consideration on December 29," the press service said.

Jabhat Al-Nusra, also known as the Al-Nusra Front, is Al-Qaeda's branch in Syria and Lebanon. It was created in 2012 and has been fighting against governmental forces in the Civil War in Syria. Several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, have already recognized it as a terrorist organization.

The Islamic State extremist group has seized large swathes of land across Iraq and Syria and declared an Islamic caliphate in June on the territories under its control. The US-led international coalition is currently carrying out airstrikes on IS targets in Syria and Iraq.
