MOSCOW, October 10 (RIA Novosti) - Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev will soon leave the hospital and resume his regular activities, Gorbachev Foundation spokesman Pavel Palazhchenko told RIA Novosti on Friday.

"I just spoke to [Gorbachev], his [medical] exam will finish today, and next week, or perhaps even today he will return to his normal schedule," Palazhchenko said.

Gorbachev suffered from a "disease recurrence" and was hospitalized Thursday.

The Gorbachev Foundation stated that the former Soviet president is set to travel to Germany in November, if his health will allow it, to take part in celebrations commemorating the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Gorbachev was the first and the last president of the Soviet Union. He announced his resignation in December 1991, after 11 of the former Soviet republics had established the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), effectively dismantling the USSR.

Gorbachev was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for his "leading role in the peace process which today characterizes important parts of the international community."

In recent years, the former Soviet leader has often received treatment in German hospitals. He suffers from a severe form of diabetes.
