MOSCOW, August 5 (RIA Novosti) - US economic sanctions pose no threat to the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Internal Troops, because they are only armed with Russian equipment, First Deputy Interior Minister and Commander-In-Chief of Interior Ministry forces Viktor Zolotov said Tuesday.

“[Internal Troops] are armed with Russian military equipment, so that the destructive elements won’t be able to destabilize the situation, disturb citizens or violate the territorial integrity of our country.… the sanctions are absolutely not fearsome,” Zolotov said during a meeting with members of the Military-Industrial Commission council.

The European Union imposed new economic sanctions on Russia on August 1, mainly targeting the financial sector. Earlier, sanctions targeting Russian financial, defense and energy sectors were also imposed by the United States.

Moscow has repeatedly referred to the sanctions as counterproductive, noting that Russia is not involved in the Ukrainian conflict and calling for a peaceful resolution.
