Russian restrictions on imports of Norwegian fish will not cause shortages on the market, a senior official at the Russian fisheries agency said Thursday.

MOSCOW, February 21 (RIA Novosti) – Russian restrictions on imports of Norwegian fish will not cause shortages on the market, a senior official at the Russian fisheries agency said Thursday.

“There will be no shortages,” said Vladimir Sokolov, a deputy head of Russia’s Federal Fisheries Agency (Rosrybolovstvo). “We have enough fish.”

Russia is one of the biggest importers of Norwegian fish, but introduced restrictions on 90 percent of producers from January 1. A ban applies to certain types of fish, including herring, cod, haddock and capelin, but not to Norwegian salmon and trout, which Russia imports in large quantities.

Sokolov said that an average Russian consumes 28 kilograms of fish annually, while the combined catch per capita stands at about 40 kilograms.
