MOSCOW, January 22 (RIA Novosti) – A Egyptian man seeking asylum in Russia has been exposed as a member of the Al-Qaeda terrorist group, Moscow’s top migration official said Wednesday.
Russian security services detained the man last October after he had applied for asylum, Olga Kirillova said. She gave no further details about the detainee’s fate.
“In October, 2013 the citizen of Egypt who is part of the al-Qaeda terrorist group was exposed and detained by the city’s Federal Security Service officers after he had applied for asylum,” Kirillova said.
The security forces reported in November that 15 suspected members of the banned group At-Takfir Wal-Hijra, a pan-Islamic religious sect with links to Al-Qaeda, had been detained along with explosives and ammunition. The group is believed to have emerged in Egypt in the 1970s or 1980s.
