MOSCOW, November 16 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s President Vladimir Putin on Saturday held a phone conversation with his interim Egyptian counterpart Adly Mansour to discuss war-torn Syria and this week’s visit of Russian ministers to Cairo.

The Kremlin reported in a statement Saturday that the two politicians expressed their intention to develop the Russian-Egyptian bilateral cooperation.

“The both sides praised results of the talks between the defense and foreign ministers of Russia and Egypt held on November 13 and 14 in Cairo,” the statement said.

The leaders also discussed the situation in Syria, which has been suffering from an over-two-year civil war, and the Middle East region, according to the Kremlin.

Earlier this week, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made a landmark visit to Cairo showing the revival of close ties between the nations that the Soviet Union and Egypt enjoyed in the past.

Shoigu told reporters that Russia and Egypt agreed to start drafting documents to lay the foundation for close cooperation in the defense sector.
