Russian police have arrested six members of a crime gang selling drugs and weapons, the Interior Ministry said Wednesday.

MOSCOW, October 30 (RIA Novosti) – Russian police have arrested six members of a crime gang selling drugs and weapons, the Interior Ministry said Wednesday.

With the help of Federal Security Service officers, police detained five people in the western Bryansk Region. Two of them – a 33-year-old man from the Urals city of Yekaterinburg and a 47-year-old man from Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Dagestan – were arrested as they attempted to sell drugs, regional police said in a statement, without specifying when those arrests were made. Another member of the same gang was arrested by police in a separate operation on Wednesday, the statement said.

“Six grenades of various modifications, four shells and mortar bombs containing a total of two kilograms of TNT, more than 50 7.62 mm cartridges and more than three kilograms of gunpowder were confiscated from the homes of the arrested men, along with 1.5 kilograms of marijuana,” police said.

A criminal case into the illegal possession, carrying and selling of weapons and explosives by a group has been opened – crimes that carry a maximum penalty of six years in prison.

Police said they are now investigating whether the gang members had connections to extremist religious organizations, and are also looking into how their activities were financed.
