Gunmen who shot dead a top security official in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia Tuesday have been identified, investigators said Wednesday morning.

NAZRAN, August 28 (RIA Novosti) – Gunmen who shot dead a top security official in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia Tuesday have been identified, investigators said Wednesday morning.

Members of an armed group led by rebel Ingush commander Artur Getagazhev were responsible for the attack, the Investigative Committee said in a statement on its website.

The Committee did not identify the other suspects, or how many of them were involved.

Akhmed Kotiyev, the head of Ingushetia’s Security Council, and Ruslan Kotiyev, his police escort, came under a hail of bullets at about 7:40 a.m. Tuesday morning while traveling by car in the village of Nizhniye Achaluki.

The policeman died at the scene; Akhmed Kotiyev was taken to a hospital but later died from his injuries. Local leaders attributed the attack to Akhmed Kotiyev’s successful campaign against militants in the republic.

Police recovered video footage from building security cameras near the crime scene as well as 111 empty cartridges and bullet fragments, the statement said.

The ammunition used in the murder is similar to that used in a number of other attacks on Ingushetian officials over the last two years, it added.
