Two men have been arrested in connection with Tuesday’s attack on a Russian parliament member in Moscow, police said Friday.

MOSCOW, July 12 (RIA Novosti) – Two men have been arrested in connection with Tuesday’s attack on a Russian parliament member in Moscow, police said Friday.

Artur Minbulatov and Zakar Gadzhiyev were placed under arrest after being detained on Wednesday near the city of Volgograd, 900 kilometers (560 miles) southeast of Moscow.

They are suspected of attacking lawmaker Roman Khudyakov from the nationalist Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), who was beaten on the Berezhkovskaya embankment around 7:30 p.m. Moscow time (15:30 GMT) on Tuesday while traveling home from work by car. He was attacked by two men who got out of another car in an apparent road rage attack, and who subsequently fled the scene.

Police said the two suspects in the attack, who come from the southern Russian republic of Dagestan, could also be involved in a Moscow extortion case from March.

“A businessman from the capital wrote a statement accusing the two men detained in connection with [the attack on] Khudyakov of extorting a large sum of money from him,” a law enforcement source said Friday. No case was opened as a result of the statement, a police spokesperson said.
