A Tatarstan mother is claiming more than 5 million rubles in damages after doctors allegedly botched the delivery of her son, leaving him with crippling disabilities, according to the Kazan Human Rights Center.
The republic’s Ministry of Health found in a recent investigation that Firaya Kravtsova, who gave birth in July 2010, was given defective care while delivering her boy, who allegedly experiences spasms and who is also blind and unable to sit properly.
“We are forced to undergo regular medical examinations in Kazan and Chistopol,” Kravtsova said, according to the rights center. “To date, the cost of transportation has reached 13,400 rubles, and the cost of drugs, orthopedic devices and treatment have reached 36,500 rubles.”
Among other fees, Kravtsova is also seeking about 2 million rubles for her son’s suffering.
Kravtsova's joins other similar cases in Russia in recent years, in which doctors and hospital staff have failed to provide appropriate care during childbirth. Last October, two families sued their local maternity hospital for mixing up their children - a fact which only emerged about a decade later.
They also demanded about 5 million rubles in damages.
The case will be heard in Tatarstan’s Chistopol District Court on September 20.
