The number of deaths among children under the age of five in Russia has decreased by 56 percent over two decades, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said in its annual global report.

The report said that under-five children’s mortality rate in Russia was declining annually by some four percent. Twelve out of a thousand children died in Russia in 2011, comparing to 27 out of a thousand in 1990.

One of the prevailing causes for a child death in Russia was AIDS, which accounted for nine percent of the overall mortality rate. This figure is higher than in Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Uganda.

On the whole, a report from the UNICEF estimated that the number of children under the age of five dying across the world fell from almost 12 million in 1990 to 6.9 million in 2011.
