A Russian court has agreed to look at fresh witness evidence in the case of Taisiya Osipova, the wife of a radical opposition activist who claims police set her up, a lawyer said.

The decision, by a court in the western Russian town of Smolensk, follows a successful lie-detector test by witness Anton Mandrik, who said earlier this month that investigators planted drugs on Osipova, lawyer Svetlana Sidorkona said.

Osipova, the 27-year-old diabetic wife of activist Sergei Fomchenkov, was jailed for ten years late last year for possession of heroin, at a trial that drew strong criticism from rights activists.

Osipova says the charges against her are trumped up. She claimed that when she was arrested in 2010, police said they would let her go if she implicated her husband.

The case was sent for review in March after then-President Dmitry Medvedev said Osipova's sentence was "unnecessarily harsh."

Witness Mandrik told the court he had received threats from police not to testify.
