Police in the Western Urals city of Izhevsk have detained a drunk driver who had chased down and rammed into a taxi and then beat the driver for refusing to take him to his destination, city police spokeswoman Natalya Markina said on Saturday.

Markina said that the man, whose name has not been released, had called a taxi to pick him up at one of the city's cafes; however, the cab driver decided the man was overly intoxicated and he refused to take the client to his destination and drove off.

"The taxi driver drove off from the cafe and the angry and drunk customer jumped in his own personal 4x4 to chase down the cab driver," Markina said, adding: "He caught up to him near a police station in Izhevsk and began ramming the vehicle, after first hitting an ambulance and a police car."

She said the drunken man then removed the taxi driver from the vehicle and began beating him. Police ran from the police station and apprehended the perpetrator.

The man has been taken into custody pending further investigation.
