An official of the Investigative Committee of the Ulyanovsk region was sacked on Monday for jumping out of the office window while drunk.

Committee head Alexander Bastrykin personally ordered the dismissal of Alexander Vatrushkin following an internal inquiry into the story, the agency reported on its web site.

The incident took place on Thursday at the committee office in Ulyanovsk, some 750 kilometers east of Moscow.

Last week, the committee’s central office dispatched a commission to Ulyanovsk to look into multiple reports of botched investigations by local officials.

Vatrushkin climbed out of a first floor window during the commission’s visit but was promptly detained outside the building and brought back in by people who came to lodge complaints with the commission, local opposition activist Alexander Bragin said on his blog earlier.

The public mistook Vatrushkin for a commission member, the Investigative Committee’s press office said. It did not elaborate.

This is not the first embarrassing incident involving drunken law enforcement officials. Last summer, a video appeared online of a police colonel in the northern Leningrad region undressed to his underwear and urinating on the door of his own office. The officer was fired along with the colleague who leaked the footage.
