Two militants were killed on Thursday in a security operation in Makhachkala, the capital of Russia's volatile North Caucasus republic of Dagestan.
A group of "up to three" militants was sealed off in a downtown apartment and ordered to surrender, the National Antiterrorist Committee said.
They refused and shot at security forces. Two were killed when security officers returned fire.
There were no casualties among security forces or civilians.
More that a decade after the end of a federal war against separatists in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Chechnya, Russian security forces continue to fight militants in other regions in the area, who stage frequent attacks on security forces, police and civilians.
