A policeman was shot dead after two assailants opened a gunfire on a police patrol in Makhachkala, the capital of Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, a local police spokesman said.
"Policemen stopped a Lada car to inspect documents, but gunfire was opened on them from the car," the spokesman said adding that one of the policemen died from sustained gun wounds.
"Two of the assailants were later detained," he added.
According to the National Anti-Terrorist Committee, more than half of all terrorist attacks in the North Caucasus in 2010 have occurred in Dagestan.
