A total of six militants, including their leader, were killed in a special operation in Russia's volatile North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, spokesman for the National Antiterrorist Committee said on Sunday.
"The active phase of the special operation is completed, six militants, including a local leader of the subversive and terrorist group Yusup Magomedov, were killed," the spokesman said. "Six rifles and two pistols were seized from the place."
The terrorist threat throughout Russia remains high, Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev said on Friday.
At lest 84 militants have been killed in the troubled North Caucasus this year, he added, as efforts continue to combat the Islamic insurgency in the Muslim republics of Dagestan, Chechnya and Ingushetia.
Terrorist attacks and shootouts with police are common in Russia's troubled North Caucasus republics, especially in Dagestan and neighboring Chechnya and Ingushetia.
The Kremlin has vowed to clamp down on militants while stepping up efforts to boost the local economy.
