A 14-year old boy who sent phony e-mails about a bomb scare at a hydropower plant has been arrested in north Russia, the Interior Ministry's press service said on Monday.

The teenager posted messages on the websites of the Federal Security Service (FSB) and hydro-electric power company RusHydro on Friday claiming that explosives had been planted at west Siberia's Sayano-Shushenskaya power plant, where 75 people died in an explosion in 2009.

The messages were traced back to the teenager in north Russia's Arkhangelsk region.

"When he saw the police at his front door, the teenager immediately confessed to the crime," the statement said. "He said he had made the prank to check the efficiency of the emergency services...the messages were sent from his personal computer; he was sure we would never be caught."

The prankster may face up to three years in prison on charges of knowingly making a false report of an act of terrorism.
