A police officer has been found dead in a car in Chechnya’s Shalinsky district, a law enforcement source told RIA Novosti on Thursday.
The officer’s body, bearing gunshot wounds to the chest, was discovered on Wednesday evening in the trunk of a vehicle near the village of Belgatoi.
The source also said the officer’s weapon was missing.
Chechnya, which has seen two brutal wars since the split-up of the Soviet Union, has experienced a period of relative calm recently.
However, the North Caucasus region remains extremely volatile and militant attacks are an almost daily occurrence in neighboring Dagestan and Ingushetia.
