A criminal case has been opened to investigate the violation of safety regulations after one miner was killed in a gas explosion at a coal mine in Siberia, a police spokesperson said on Saturday.
Seven others were injured in the blast, which occurred at the Kransnogorskaya coal mine near the town of Prokopyevsk in the Kemerovo region at around 02:00 a.m. Moscow time [22:00 GMT, Friday], police said.
As many as 66 miners were underground at the time of the explosion.
Two gas explosions at the nearby Raspadskaya coal mine killed 67 people on May 9. At least 23 miners are still missing. Investigators say the blasts were caused by a breach of safety regulations.
