Russian medics have vaccinated some 30,000 people against measles in Russia's Far Eastern Amur Region, a spokesman for Russian consumer rights watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said Tuesday.
The first measles cases hit the region April 16-17, with the disease spreading from three infected people who had entered the area from China, which declared a pandemic. The virus strain is different from those usually found in Russia.
Emergency vaccination started in the Amur Region April 17. Local authorities restricted unvaccinated people's movement to China. Customs control measures have been reinforced.
As of May 24, a total of 66 measles cases were confirmed in the cities of Blagoveshchensk, Belogorsk and Tynda.
Measles is an acute infectious disease characterized by a fever and eruption of red spots on the body. It mainly occurs in children.
Those who have not caught measles before or not been vaccinated against it can easily contract the disease from infected people.
