Background radiation level is normal at the Volgodonsk nuclear power plant in south Russia after an emergency shutdown, the Russian nuclear watchdog Rosenergoatom said on Sunday.

The first power unit of the nuclear power plant was shut down by an emergency protection system on Sunday morning. Earlier, a plant's spokesman said problems with a steam generator were the likely cause of the protection system activation.

The watchdog said on its website radiation at the Volgodonsk nuclear power plant and in neighboring territories "does not exceed normal background levels."

Repairs are expected to take about four days.

The Volgodonsk NPP, situated some 1,000 km (621 miles) south of Moscow and has one pressurized water reactor, started operation in 2001.
