Russian protest planned against baby seal cull

MOSCOW, March 14 (RIA Novosti) - Environmentalists are to hold a protest in the Siberian town of Novosibirsk on March 15 against the culling of baby seals on the coast of the Arkhangelsk Region's White Sea, the organizers said on Friday.

"We want people to know that each spring many thousands of newborn seal cubs are slaughtered," said a member of the Alliance for Animal Rights, Yekaterina Kryazhkina.

Around 50 people are expected to take part in the demonstration. The group also held a protest on the coast of the White Sea earlier this year.

The killing of baby seals for their fur and meat has been banned in most countries. Russia is the only country that allows the hunting of newborn seal cubs.

In Canada, the culling of seal cubs for commercial purposes has been banned since 1987 but is still permitted for private individuals.

The hunting season usually starts in February - March when the seals gather together to breed.
