GROZNY, March 2 (RIA Novosti) - Chechen election officials reported a turnout of over 90% in Russian presidential polls on Sunday.

"By 7:00 p.m. in Chechnya [4:00 p.m. GMT], 90.87% of the electorate had voted," said Ismail Baikhanov, chairman of the regional election committee.

He added that voting, due to finish at 9:00 p.m. local time, had been carried out in an orderly fashion, without disturbances.

Chechnya, which saw a devastating separatist war in the 1990s and early 2000s, reported the highest turnout in Russia during December's elections for the State Duma, the country's lower house of parliament.

Turnout in the Chechen Republic was around 99%, with some 99% of the vote for the Kremlin-backed United Russia party.
