MOSCOW, July 30 (RIA Novosti) - British energy official Malcolm Wicks has arrived in Russia on a two-day visit to discuss nuclear waste disposal, the British Embassy in Moscow said Monday.

The minister of state for energy, who serves under the U.K.'s business and enterprise secretary, is currently in St. Petersburg, from where he will travel to a former naval base in the Arctic city of Murmansk, near the Norwegian border, where about 30 tons of spent nuclear fuel is stored.

The U.K. has earmarked about $750 million as part of a G-8 10-year program to fight nuclear proliferation.

In Russia, as well as in Kazakhstan, the U.K.'s focus is on the closure of weapons-grade plutonium reactors and the employment of former employees of the defense industry complex to prevent them offering their expertise elsewhere.
