Poor weather conditions in the Siberian region of Irkutsk are hampering a rescue operation for a group of fishermen reported stranded on drifting ice in Lake Baikal, regional emergencies officials said Wednesday.

KRASNOYARSK, January 3 (RIA Novosti) - Poor weather conditions in the Siberian region of Irkutsk are hampering a rescue operation for a group of fishermen reported stranded on drifting ice in Lake Baikal, regional emergencies officials said Wednesday.

The mission was launched Tuesday after a caller reported spotting five or six people and two cars on an ice floe some 10-15 kilometers (6-9 miles) offshore.

A rescue boat and a hovership have been searching for the stranded fishermen since Tuesday afternoon, but several helicopters provided for the effort by the Emergency Situations Ministry remain grounded because of heavy snowfall and fog.
