Russia's incumbent justice minister will make an excellent prosecutor general, the speaker of the lower chamber of parliament said Monday.

MOSCOW, June 19 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's incumbent justice minister will make an excellent prosecutor general, the speaker of the lower chamber of parliament said Monday.

The presidential press service said earlier Monday that Yury Chaika had been nominated to replace Vladimir Ustinov, who was removed from his post as the nation's top prosecutor early June.

Boris Gryzlov, the State Duma speaker and head of pro-presidential party United Russia, said Chaika had a long service record with the Prosecutor's Office, from being an investigator to first deputy and then acting prosecutor general in 1999.

"He is even called a 100% prosecutor," Gryzlov said.

Vyacheslav Volodin, a deputy speaker of the Duma, welcomed the candidacy of the 55-year-old, who has been justice minister since 1999.

"This could be called the best decision," he said. "Chaika is no newcomer and knows the justice system well."

He said the prosecutor's office only stood to gain from his arrival, as he was a political heavyweight untainted by any scandals.

In the immediate aftermath of Ustinov's removal, Dmitry Kozak, a long-time ally of President Vladimir Putin and his envoy to the Southern Federal District, had been tipped for the post.
