MOSCOW, June 19 (RIA Novosti)- Senior members of Russia's upper chamber of parliament said Monday that the Federation Council would back the president's nominee for the country's top prosecutor.
The president's representative to the chamber said Monday that Yury Chaika, the current justice minister, had been nominated as prosecutor general.
Speaker Sergei Mironov said, "I can say with certainty that there will be no difficulties from the standpoint of the Federation Council's decision on Chaika's candidacy."
Mironov said that he had known Chaika for a number of years and knew that he could do the job professionally. He added that the chamber would consider the matter on June 23.
Stansilav Vavilov, the chairman of the committee for judicial and legal affairs, said, "My forecast is that the Federation Council will unequivocally support his candidacy."
If his candidacy is approved, Chaika will replace Vladimir Ustinov, who resigned at the start of the month. Early speculation on this successor then focused on Dmitry Kozak, a long-time ally of President Vladimir Putin and currently his envoy to the Southern Federal District.
