MOSCOW, December 26 (RIA Novosti) - The first satellite in Europe's planned Galileo satellite navigation system will be launched on December 28, the Russian Space Agency's official spokesman said Monday.

Vyacheslav Davidenko said the Galileo would be carried into orbit by a Russian Soyuz rocket from Russia's Baikonur Space Center at 5:19 a.m. GMT Wednesday.

The Galileo launch will take place two days later than originally planned because of an unspecified glitch in the satellite's ground station network.

Galileo, built by Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. in Britain, is a satellite navigation system designed to compete with the American GPS system.
