MAKHACHKALA/ ROSTOV-ON-DON, December 26 (RIA Novosti) - A rescue team from Makhachkala has set out for western Dagestan, a Russian republic in the North Caucasus, to search for a border guard who disappeared in an avalanche Sunday, the local emergency situations service said Monday.
A total of six people, five servicemen and a local resident, were caught in the avalanche in the Tsuntinsky District. The resident and one border guard were killed, three survived, and one is still missing.
A spokesperson for the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said fierce snow storms were complicating the rescue operation. "A helicopter will transport 10 rescuers and a dog to the site as soon as the storm subsides," the source said.
