MOSCOW, December 21 (RIA Novosti) - The first unit of the Chinese-Russian Tianwan nuclear power plant in China was launched December 20, the general contractor for the Russian Federal Nuclear Power Agency for the construction and modernization of nuclear power plants abroad said Wednesday.

Atomstroiexport is building the first and second units of the nuclear power plant in Lianyungang in the Jiangsu province under a 1992 intergovernmental agreement.

This marks the first reactor launch in China with an external neutron generator.

The launch of the turbine and the connection of the generator to the network are scheduled for January 2006.

According to experts, the VVER-1000 rector installed at the plant is highly reliable.

Atomstroiexport, in which Russia's energy giant Gazprom has a 53.85% majority stake, is operating the construction of nuclear power plants in Iran, China, India and Bulgaria under intergovernmental agreements worth $4.5 billion.
