MOSCOW, December 21 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is closely monitoring NATO's deployment plans on the territory of its new members, the Russian Foreign Minister said Wednesday.

"Issues related to NATO's plans to deploy its infrastructure and military contingents are subject to close scrutiny on our part," Sergei Lavrov told a news conference in Moscow.

Lavrov said the Russia-NATO Founding Act stipulated that large military contingents should not be deployed on the territory of new member countries.

"We are trying to clarify this issue during direct consultations with the alliance," Lavrov said, adding that the size of military contingents to be deployed in new member countries had yet to be determined.
