YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, June 28 (RIA Novosti) - Representatives from ethnic groups in Sakhalin's north blocked roads leading to oil and gas facility projects Tuesday. The protests began in Nysh, where a coastal oil and gas-processing complex is being constructed, the Regional Ethnic Groups Council said. The protest was sanctioned by the local administration and will run for two days, blocking roads from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. About 100-150 Nivkhs, Uiltas and Evenks are involved in the protest. "Ethnic groups demand an independent ethnologic examination to determine the level of negative impact from the new projects and outline a set of measures to minimize it."
Oil producers should finance the examination and ethnic groups should be permitted to choose experts, he said.
The Regional Ethnic Groups Council is also demanding that an Ethnic Union fund be set up to finance measures experts might propose.
