Estonia ratifies border agreements with Russia, ends dispute - Kosachev

STRASBOURG, June 20 (RIA Novosti, Kristina Rodriguez) - Konstantin Kosachev, the head of the Russian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), said that the Estonian parliament's ratification on Monday of a number of agreements on the border with Russia ended any disputes on this issue.

"We will obviously have to ask lawyers to consider extra amendments to the agreements and evaluate the legal consequences," Kosachev told RIA Novosti.

"The ratification puts an end to any discussions about possibly revising the Russian-Estonian land border," he said.

According to him, Estonia has two problems - legal and political - that are connected with the bilateral dialogue on the border issue.

The crux of the first problem is that the ratified agreements have references to a number of documents that contain provisions Russia disagrees with.

When speaking about the political problem, Kosachev said it was connected with the desire of a number of radical, nationalist parties in Estonia that wanted to use the ratification of a "purely technical document" for their own purposes.

Kosachev gave the Estonian parliament credit for not approving the most radical proposals.

According to him, the Estonian members of parliament had showed a wiser approach to the issue than their Latvian counterparts, who "continue to play political games with the border issue."
