We have a heated discussion in the wake of the Scottish independence referendum, as the majority of those who voted decided that it’s best to stick with the United Kingdom – although, it was a pretty nose-to-nose race. Here are some of the comments.

Richard de Lacy commented:

“All these trolls blubbering at the Scots — do you know they invented the telephone, the television, the steam engine (which still gives you electricity), and were the driving force behind the British Empire, which shaped much of the modern world? That was as part of the UK. They asked to merge with England in 1707 because they were bankrupt, after a failed attempt at empire-building in America. Yet 150 years later, the British defeated the Chinese Empire and founded Hong Kong, just because some Scots faced losing money. They know their country better than you do.”

Brian Ndwane wrote:

“Great courage from the Scottish people though with slight lead majority voted to remain part of Britain, to my understanding the Scottish people have laid a foundation and brought a new era in life. The percentage of those who voted YES speaks volumes about politics in Britain particularly in Scotland and now the question is, will Britain abolish Kingdom and become a Federal state given that the British government led by Prime Minister David Cameron promised the Scottish who supported NO vote that Scotland will be given more autonomous powers if they win while on the other hand the people of England also want those powers given to England as well if given to Scotland? Are we to see the end of Europe's most powerful Kingdom? Surely one way or the other the Scottish people have made history after 3 centuries of their existence in the British union.”

Mark Stuart Dixey commented:

“Better Together! While the UK is not a perfect system, there are plenty of other areas of the UK disenchanted with Westminster, especially the North of England. When the SNP supporters were bashing Westminster, the same things affected other parts of England. I was born in Scotland, and studied there and the SNP brigade were always bashing London, trying to lecture me about the evils of Westminster. My reply was, ''the north of England and parts of Wales share the same opinion.”

Ian McCulloch has a different opinion:

“The referendum was NOT FREE or FAIR. The voters were subjected to a barrage of scare stories and intimidation from multi-national corporations, banks, NATO, the EU, the unelected Queen, government, and even the U.N. It was not a vote for opportunity — it was a vote of fear. It should be declared null and void and a new referendum called with independent international observers.”
