Wednesday: A US Central Command report found that US Air Force Officers acted with negligence by attacking Syrian government positions; the number of workers living in poverty in the UK has reached a record high; and calls grow for reversal of Saudi food blockade in Yemen as food crisis set to hit millions of civilians.

A summary report on an investigation into US airstrikes in Syria has been released by the US Central Command, which sheds light into an incident that took place in September when US Air Forces bombed Syrian government positions.  We speak to Nadim Shehadi, Associate Fellow at Chatham House.
 
The number of workers living in poverty in the UK has reached a record high. Research by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation shows that 3.8 million workers, or one in eight, live in poverty. A combination of low wages and rising housing costs is identified as responsible for pushing people into financial difficulty. We speak to Ben Wray, Campaigns Officer for Common Weal think tank.
International humanitarian charity Oxfam is warning of an impending “catastrophe” in Yemen as food shortages increase as a result of Saudi import restrictions. Oxfam is warning that the country, which is 90% dependent on food imports, will be down to almost zero imports by next April, leading to a major humanitarian crisis.
 
The UK’s government counter-extremism strategy, Prevent, is today facing a legal challenge in the High Court. Dr Salman Butt, a British Muslim activist, is arguing that the legislation breaches his free speech rights.
 
Investigators in the Philippines have alleged that the recent shooting of former mayor Rolando Espinosa in police custody, was not the result of a gunfight — as claimed by police at the time — rather an extra judicial killing. Controversial President Rodrigo Duterte however, is standing by the official version of events.
 
Chile’s supreme court has ruled that the government can apply for the extradition of two former secret police agents wanted for the 1976 assassination of a Chilean exile in Washington DC — forty years on though, we’ll be asking why it’s taken this long…
 
Jared Kushner, the son-in-law and advisor of president-elect Donald Trump sits on the board of a foundation that has been sending tens of thousands of dollars to aid the establishment of settlements in the Occupied Palestinian West Bank. Matthew Ayton asks how Kushner’s role as an advisor to Trump may impact upon the administration’s role vis-à-vis Israel-Palestine.
