Friday: US President Donald Trump’s controversial appointment of James “mad dog” Mattis as Defense Secretary; and US Congress votes 99-0 to extend sanctions on Iran for another 10 years.

Retired marine general James Mattis has been appointed as Donald Trump’s defense secretary.  Mattis, nicknamed “Mad Dog” has been an outspoken critic of Barack Obama’s policy in the Middle East and regards Iran as the major threat in the region.  But he differs from Trump on other issues such as policy towards Syria and Russia, as we look into.
 
The United States Congress has voted 99-to-0 to extend the president’s authority to impose sanctions on Iran for another decade. Matthew Ayton has more on the reaction in Tehran, and what the ramifications of this move could be.
 
As Rwandan authorities open up additional criminal cases against senior French officials what realistic prospect is there that France will co-operate and has the international community learned anything from the 1994 genocide as South Sudan looks set to engage in its own round of mass bloodletting.
