As the presidential race in the US gains momentum, potential candidates are desperate to outshine one another in a battle for the Oval Office, and while there is no lack of pledges to make America strong again, most of the promises appear to be weak on substance.

On the domestic front, the country is more polarized than ever before, with the respective frontrunners for each party, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, complete opposites when it comes to their vision for the homeland. Clinton is trying to toe the line between continuing Obama’s legacy and establishing herself as her own woman, while Trump is eager to completely remake America and reverse what he sees to be the weakness and disorder of the Obama years.

Undoubtedly, this forthcoming election will fundamentally affect that path that America sets itself out on, and not only domestically, but abroad as well. Hillary is a vicious war hawk, while Trump is much more pragmatic and open to practicing diplomacy with President Putin.

With America at a crossroads in more ways than one, it’s useful to take a quick breather and reflect on the overall direction that the country is going.

Chris Shipler, American political commentator and Terry Miller, editor at the Beacon media, Pasadena Independent paper(California) shared their views.
