BEIJING (Sputnik) – On Monday, US President Donald Trump announced the new strategy for Afghanistan, which included expanded authority for US troops to target terrorists in the South Asian country. Trump appreciated India's current contribution to Afghanistan's stability but stated he expected New Delhi to do more. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that India would be a key partner for the United States that could help modernize Afghanistan both politically and economically.
“Donald Trump talked about close US-Indian relations, we are glad to see the development of normal and friendly relations between these countries if these relations do not harm other countries’ interests and create positive conditions for regional development,” Hua said.
She expressed hope that both countries would play a more constructive role in promoting regional peace and development.
On Tuesday, the Indian Foreign Ministry welcomed Trump’s remarks and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to ensuring peace and stability in Afghanistan.
