The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is not Russia's political project, Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov said Tuesday, adding that the bloc is first of all focused on economic integration.

CHOLPON-ATA (Sputnik) — Any allegations that the project is political in nature, or that Russia has "imposed" its creation are false, the Russian official stressed.

"Across the world, as well as within the union, a lot of people do not fully understand the nature of the EAEU and tend to impose on us the vision about the union as about a political project, saying it is Russia's political project. I can say that this project was launched at the initiative of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who supported the idea of Eurasian integration in the early 1990s," Shuvalov said at the Issyk Kul-2017 economic forum
