WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States is still ready to work together with Russia to defeat Islamists and deescalate violence in Syria, an official at the US Department of State told Sputnik on Wednesday amid worsening bilateral relations between Moscow and Washington.

Asked whether Washington backed the creation of a new de-escalation zone in Syria, the US official replied that, "The United States supports any effort that can genuinely de-escalate the violence in Syria, ensure unhindered humanitarian access, focus energies on the defeat of ISIS and other terrorists, and create the conditions for a credible political resolution of the conflict."

"We will continue to try and work with our partners, including Russia, to achieve these goals and to defeat ISIS [outlawed in Russia]," the official added.
