The United Nations should address reports about casualties among civilians in Syria resulting from the US-led coalition's airstrikes, senior Russian lawmaker Dmitry Novikov told Sputnik on Sunday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, Syria's state-run SANA news agency reported the US-led airstrikes in the north-eastern Syrian province of Deir ez-Zor claimed lives of at least six civilians, injuring 10 others. It was the fourth case this month when Syrian civilians became victims of the coalition's airstrikes, according to the news outlet.

"The United Nations should be concerned with the situation unfolding in Syria. The casualties among civilians, which are caused by the US-led coalition, happen too often. It needs to be regulated, there is a need for bringing the actions of the United States and its allies into the international legal framework. The UN Security Council should consider this issue," Novikov, first deputy chairman of Russia's State Duma Committee on International Affairs, said.

The lawmaker added that US military and politicians were reluctant to ensure coordination between the Syrian government and the coalition.

The US-led coalition of 68 nations has been conducting airstrikes against the Daesh terrorist group (outlawed in Russia) in Syria and Iraq since 2014. The strikes in Syria are not authorized by the government of President Bashar Assad or the UN Security Council.
